Canterbury Tourism

Canterbury Must Sees

Canterbury Cathedral, seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, is the heart of the City of Canterbury and one of the most recognisable landmarks in the United Kingdom. Founded in 597 AD by Augustine, Canterbury Cathedral is now a World Heritage Site, along with the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey and the Saxon St. Martin’s Church.

With more than a million visitors per year, the Cathedral constitutes a ‘mandatory’ stop on any Kent tour itinery. As one of the most visited landmarks in the UK, Cathedral services are held three or more times a day.

Evidence of the life and times of earlier inhabitants can be viewed at the Roman Museum which houses an in situ mosaic pavement dating from around 300 CE. Other surviving structures from the Roman age include Queningate (a blocked gate in the city wall) and the Dane John Mound (once part of a Roman cemetery). In the eighteenth century Gardens were built beside the Dane John Mound, and a memorial erected on its summit.
